When they first met they were peers at Fairfax High School, whether they knew their future or not Anthony Kiedis, Hillel Slovak, Jack Irons, and Michael "Flea" Balzary found each other, and a band that created a new scene for the rock industry. Founded in 1983 in Los Angeles, California, the group brought their funk groove to the rock world and created a whole new world of music to play around in. Getting their first record deal in 1984, putting out their self titled album ,Slovak and Irons decided to stick with their other band What is This?, leaving Flea and Fiedis in search of new members. They found replacement musicians for the time being, just for Slovak to grow tired of What is This?, the band trudged on dealing with heavy drug abuse and put out their second album "Freaky Styley", which resulted in a big flop. Irons eventually left What is This? and came back to the band resulting in the replacements being fired. The band was back together. Their style as a band usually focused on rock or funk which usually created some really interesting songs and a unique style for artists to listen to and follow. After working on their next album and battling more with their drug addiction, "The Uplift Mofo Party Plan" was released. Not even a year later Slovak died due to his addiction with heroin Soon after Irons split from the band to join up with other artists to form Pearl Jam. Flea and Kiedis, who was also dealing with his addiction with drugs, put in the time and effort with the help of replacement drummers and guitarist to put out their fourth album is put out "Mother's Milk" in 1989 resulting in chart topping success. The band went on to find new replacements for the lack of permanent members, and eventually settled down with Chad Smith on drums and Josh Klinghoffer on guitar. The band has always kept their own style throughout the years, perhaps becoming more mild in their later years but that may be due to the lessening in drug abuse. Kiedis went on to recover from his drug addiction. While on the Scar Tissue tour, he was quoted saying this which he put into his book titled Scar Tissue, "I knew there was never anyone to blame when people get into drugs. They're always responsible for their own behavior, and it's not the dealer, and it's not the friend, it's not the childhood." Staying clean has been a goal that he wants to continue, and he says that he still to this day has a problem with drugs, in the same book Kiedis says, "When I do think, "Man a fucking motel room with a couple of thousand dollars' worth of narcotics would do me right," I just look over at my dog and remember that Buster's never seen me high."
