1991: On the 24th of September, 1991, the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ put out their album Blood Sugar Sex Magik published by Warner Bros and it immediately set in motion a new sound for alternative music in general, adding their own funk-rock style to the mix sets a new tone for new generations to listen to.
1992-1993: A new style of rock emerges which makes a big impact on the ears of the nation. This new type of rock was catchy and had angst that really let the teenagers of the time have a type of music to rock out to. Grunge was born, it’s main influence Pearl Jam. 1994: Pearl Jam goes on their spring tour bringing about the concept of playing large concerts at college campuses instead of booking out large arenas. They continued to play as smaller bands they put together with other artists of the time, some including drummer Jack Irons from Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Layne Staley from Alice in Chains. 1994: Pearl Jam cancels their summer tour due to conflicts between the band and TicketMaster. The band wanted to have low costing tickets but TicketMaster decided against this and the price of the ticket never reached below $20. So with a collective decision from the band they decided to cancel the show and take TicketMaster to court on behalf of unfair business practice. |
2001: John Mayer’s first debut album Room for Squares is published. His album is chock full of pop and rock songs that carry with them his signature jazz tone. John’s wielding of his jazz-like style allowed him to capture a wide variety of listeners with this opening album.
2003: In September of 2003, John Mayer follows up Room for Squares, now a triple platinum album, with Heavier Things, which takes off without a hitch. John’s influence in the music industry strengthens and he starts to delve into the blues, and jazz scene more and more with each year, touring with guitar legends such as BB King, Eric Clapton, and Buddy Guy, and Herbie Hancock.
2005: John Mayer receives Song Of The Year at the Grammy Awards for his hit song "Daughters". This is around the time John's music was beginning to become popular throughout the nation. Following his acceptance of the award in an interview on The Ellen DeGenerous Show Mayer, stated that he felt as if he shouldn't have one the award against competitor Alicia Keys' hit song "If I Ain't Got You" and proceeded to cut the grammy in half giving her the top half of the award in honor of her song.
